my mayan calendar

I’m not one to collect a lot of stuff on my travels, but I often do return with one piece that tends to be more than just a symbol of my trip – it also holds more meaning – like our Fleur De Lis from New Orleans.

When I was in Mexico for Beth’s wedding I was absolutely determined to come home with a Mayan Calendar.

Maya Calendar

In 2004 I took a philosophy class in Ireland that explored the civil war in Guatemala and since then I have been fascinated by the Mayan culture. You’d think I would have picked up a calendar when I was actually in Guatemala, but I guess I was just too focused on the Guatemalan Coffee.

Today the calendar sits on my bookshelf. Every time I look at it I am reminded of a conversation I had with a woman in Antigua, Guatemala. We were talking about how so many think the world will end when the Mayan Calendar ends.

She simply and so logically said, You know how your calendar ends in December and then begins again in January? Our’s does the same it’s just longer.

While I have never feared that the end of the world will come in 2012, my perspective was still shifted.

It’s funny how most often, the logical explanations to our biggest fears and stresses in the world are the simplest.
