When I was in elementary school I had a friend who did gymnastics. I was a figure skater. We believed our talents complemented each other so we made a promise that we would one day support each other in our respective Olympic games – her the summer and me the winter. The promise was amid other childhood aspirations, like combining our personal interests and then making up a job where we could one day work together and then we’d marry the best friend of the other friend’s best friend and all live happily ever after.
Did you do that too?
Anyway, during this time I am always reminded of the day on the playground during recess where my old friend and I made that promise. And while there was never enough time, money or desire to get me there, the winter Olympics have always held a special place in my heart. They are my Olympics. I am pretty excited to be watching all of the games over the next couple of weeks, but mostly my favorite – figure skating.
What’s your favorite winter Olympic sport?
I cannot wait to watch figure skating. I used to figure skate (um, when I was like 5) but it’s so pretty and fun to watch!
i’d like to say figure skating is number one, but i also have been digging the snowboarding recently!
moguls is the only way to go, well that and men’s doubles luge.
I’m not crazy about the winter olympics, but I did want to say that I used to be a gymnast and I totally thought I was going to the 2000 Olympics (I wasn’t, not even by a long shot).
My friends and I were going to be bobsledders – and the first all womens team, at that!
Figure skating also! Can’t help it since I loved since I was little, even through all the drama years with Tanya Harding, etc!
You guys were cute. I remember a friend and I pretending to be on the bobsled team. Figure skating is probably my favorite winter sport, but I love so many of them.
Speed Skating – Any race with Apollo Anton Ohno. Love that guy, and that sport is amazing! I am so glad he came out of retirement to participate, and his teammate and what he has been through is an amazing story to. He almost died on the ice 6 months ago and now he has a bronze medal. Go US!
I’m not really a fan of the winter olympics but if I do happen to catch anything this year, it will probably be figure skating. I’m really interested in seeing what Johnny Weir does (and wears!)
i always wanted to be an olympian too. i love watching skiing and hockey in the winter olympics and summer i’m all about the rowing and gymnastics.
I won’t lie– Every time I hear a great song, I wonder if I could use it in my short or long figure skating program.
I like figure skating best too. Olympic is big over here, some tv channels air it all the time LIVE. My favorite is also figure skating. Little girls love it, don’t you think? For me those graceful figure skaters looked like a bunch of princesses
Awww, I’m glad I read this, because now I know why you tweeted what you did. I love the ice skating too, as well as the half pipe. But, my heart belongs to the summer olympics. I’m a swimmer.
It dosen’t matter the sport, I will always cry at medal ceremonies during the national anthem and gatorade commercial that depict olympic athletes in black and white.
