Pressed by the Knot – which pushes me to gasp and yell, “Mike!! We have to do …xyz!!!” every time a new action item pops up in our checklist – I have been putting off the part of the wedding planning process that I was most excited about: the honeymoon.
I don’t want anything that resembles a resort and if I can help it, I don’t want to be lying around doing nothing all day long. I realize that for at least part of the time we will have to relax, so I also want it to be a place that caters to both being adventurous and relaxing, sometimes. I’d also love to be near the ocean.
I have asked Mike his top five and for the most part they overlap mine. Here is a blend…
Spain. Barcelona to be exact.
Croatia.
Southern France.
Portugal. This would definitely include a jaunt to the Canary Islands.
Tunisia. Depending on where we go, this might be a place I want to tack on for a few days at the end of our trip.
Greece.
Have you taken a honeymoon? Where did you go? Where would you go if you could go anywhere?

We went to the Maldives for our honeymoon and I highly recommend it. We figured it would be best to go on one huge blowout vacation to a place we’d probably never visit again. Turns out we loved the Maldives so much we’ll be heading back there for our 5th anniversary.
Wow!! Lovely places!! We have planned a Spain honeymoon too.. whenever we get married that is!! but love the list!
Sounds fun! I’m not married but the best trip I’ve ever taken was to Argentina. Barcelona can be super expensive – but I loved Portugal! It’s beautiful, laid back, and totally affordable. If you go to the Canaries I think the best is Gran Canaria or Furteventura! Looking forward to seeing what you plan
I haven’t taken a honeymoon yet, but man oh day, all of those spots sound AMAZING.
We just booked our honeymoon for 4 nights in Paris, 4 nights in Venice, and 4 nights in Rome (direct flights all the way around). We wanted an adventure! No beach chairs in sight!
We first thought about Greece and Spain but decided to explore all 3 and not have the locations be so far away from each other. Let us know what you decide!
My requirements for my honeymoon were the exact points you said you did not want to do
But its your honeymoon- which celebrates what each couple’s idea of a fabulous trip is. I think we’re doing Greece in April! (hopefully finalizing the plans this weekend) all your options sound fun and fab! Can’t wait to hear the verdict
I hold out the hopes that someday we will go to Nepal for our honeymoon. I spent a semester there in college and I figure that a honeymoon might be my only chance to go back. I’m not gonna hold my breath though. :p
how exciting : )
greece is awesome! i want something beachy for my honeymoon (which won’t be happening for a long time!) and relaxing and not worrying about trains and planes and a lot of sights.
can’t wait to hear what you choose!
Greece is seriously on my “go next” list.
GREEEEECEEE! I’ve told you this a bunch of times before but well, I really WANT to go to Greece. All the photos I’ve seen so far are so heavenly
We went to St. John’s. Though we had wanted to go to Italy where neither my husband nor I had been (surprising considering how many places we have traveled.) We skipped it because of the expensive Euro and went to the U.S. Virgin Islands where I lived for a while as a young child and had not visited since.
While we did spend some time at the typical Caribbean resorts, the highlight was the week we spent at Maho Bay, an eco resort on St. John. It was so low key with great people. We also ended up snorkeling a different site every day.
It was so unlike either of us to take a “Caribbean Honeymoon” but you find what matches you. (great food, snorkeling, steel pan bands, painkillers, barefoot restaurants, ceviche restaurants, and guessing which cruise line the tourist came from in St. Thomas)
My honeymoon was in Thailand…we spent a week in Bangkok and then did a tour for another week and a half and it was phenomenal! I would recommend it ten fold. It is absolutely an adventure and although it is incredibly busy you can definitely relax…ummm massage anyone? Plus if you want to be near the beach you could always go to Phuket for a while… An added plus, when we went it was SO cheap. The flights were the most expensive part…the accommodations were inexpensive and the food was cheap and incredible! Probably one of the best places I’ve been so far! On an unrelated note I’m going to Portugal, Spain (Barcelona) and Morocco in a month so if you are still interested in Spain and Portugal I can tell you what I thought
Go to Greece! It’s not so expensive once you’re over there, it’s gorgeous and romantic! Plenty to do and see but also great places to relax!
Hawaii held on to its No. 1 spot on the list of top 10 overall destinations for the ninth year in a row, according to Modern Bride’s annual survey of 6,000 travel agents.
Italy, noted for its cuisine and cultural attractions, followed in second place while Tahiti’s beaches and secluded locale earned it the No. 3 spot.So you can choose between these destinations for your honeymoon.
I ahve to say, when I went to france and met a million Tunisians, I was thinking, “should go to Tunisia”. Nicest people in the world (it seems, especially the nicest people in France)
p.s. but i would choose Lanai…awesome island, or some other really small Hawaiian island. Do not go to Maui or Honolulu unless it is just for a day trip and you like crowds ALOT
Go to Brasil!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, I promise it will be the best decision of your life.
But, if I had to choose from the list I would pick Tunisia.
[...] Tonight, Mike repaired my shoddy dresser drawer that I purchased from Ikea – which was a big mistake looking back because the quality is horrible – but at the time, the choice in a cheaper version helped fund a girls’ weekend. I haven’t gone clothes shopping since last summer (the Wrentham Outlets have missed me), but I did go to Costa Rica in December and my lack of shopping helped support the trip. Our bed was pulled from my parents’ basement and it shows, but I keep pushing off buying a new one because I won’t settle for a mediocre honeymoon. [...]
Southern France is my vote. Absolutely breathtaking. If you need a new swimsuit Swimspot.com, a new swimwear site, wants to give you 40% off your entire order. Just put in CLVIP when you checkout and have some fun. I know you don’t want to just sit around, but after all the craziness that goes into a wedding a little relaxing with your husband can be just what you need.
