when music takes you places: part deux

The lovely Andi at Misadventures with Andi started a series today – Music Memory Monday – and it stemmed from a post I did a while back: when music takes you places.

For this, I think she is too kind and I love what she did with something that started as a spur of the moment idea. Andi noted that she had drafted her post a couple of months ago, but over time, she realized there were just too many songs and memories for one post, hence the series. And with that, she reminded me of something.

My last post was a mere snapshot of all the songs and memories that I have too, so I thought I would follow her lead and throw out my music memories in a series of posts, in no particular order. To start…

When I hear A Long December by the Counting Crows it just happens to be snowing. I am on a street in a Boston suburb, steps from my little Catholic School. I am in 7th grade and I am wearing a red plaid skirt and a collared shirt under my winter coat. There is a Christmas trolley that coasts up and down the lightly powdered streets, ringing it’s bell at almost every corner. I am with my friends on a Wednesday afternoon – we had 1/2 days every Wednesday because the public school used our classrooms for CCD. Each Wednesday we grabbed pizza close by and hung out at the library until our parents could pick us up. This routine was always extended in the winter because with the complementary Christmas trolley, we could really go places. We’d visit the part of town that actually had boutiques and shops and we’d feel older visiting them than we did just stopping by the penny candy shop steps away from school. It’s only coincidental that the song reminds me of winter, I can’t even remember when it came out. And if you think about the lyrics, there is no mention of snow.

If you haven’t yet, go check out Andi’s Music Monday post today – here she reminisces about Journey’s Lights. And I know I’ve asked you this once before but I am sure, like us, you have a longer list – what kind of music takes you places?
