Back when I mentioned I was taking some time off and perhaps a few long weekends away, Montreal was not yet finalized, but now it is! My friends and I will be driving up from Boston, with one friend flying up from New York, in a couple of weekends. Now, we just need to figure out what we will do when we get up there.
The last time I traveled to Montreal I was a kid and it was for one of my little brother’s hockey tournaments. Let’s just say it didn’t totally count because I spent most of my time in a rink.
Naturally, my inclination is to find exciting things to do that are free. I came across a free exhibit that will be spread out between the Jean-Drapeau metro station to the Biosphère until April 30th. The exhibit is Walking on Thin Ice and is part of International Polar Year. It is comprised of 40 giant photographs that give a unique perspective of the Canadian Arctic.
In my search I also discovered a travel blog that lists a number of free things to do in Montreal – kathika. Their most intriguing recommendation to me is Old Montreal, which is the original part of the city near the Saint Lawrence River. Apparently, many of the buildings date back to the 17th century and it has a bunch of sidewalk cafes, stone townhouses and the walls of the old fortified city.
From Evelyn Reid at About.com I learned that the world’s largest underground city is in Montreal, which I am sure we will experience as it has shops and transportation.
Have you been to Montreal? Do you have any suggestions?

The only thing I know about Montreal is that’s where the Canadiens are located. But how cool is it that it’s International Polar Year! If you check out the sidewalk cafes be sure to get lots of pictures for me.

Hmmm….. you know I’ve never actually been to Montreal. I’ve been to Vancouver and that area. Toronto. But not Montreal. I hear it is incredible. Can’t wait to see & hear details on the trip!
I’ve never been to Montreal (or Canada, for that matter), but I have heard it’s a lot of fun. I’m so excited that you and your friends were able to finalize everything!
