This Tuesday, Mike and I attended the LifeSavor cocktail party at the Langham Boston hotel to benefit Community Servings.

If you are not already familiar, Community Servings provides free home-delivered meals throughout eastern Massachusetts to people who are unable to shop or cook for themselves because of HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. They provide 725 clients, their dependent families, and caregivers with appealing, nutritious meals, reaching out to those in greatest need.

The reception was so much fun. Though I must say, it was a strange feeling to enjoy the entire cocktail party without having any responsibilities- last year I volunteered and was tasked with escorting groups of people to their restaurant of choice post-cocktail hour. And during the last “foodie” event I attended, that Susie so eloquently recapped on We are not Martha, I was working.

Upon entering, we were greeted by a Joan Rivers impersonator, skilled in honing in on your unspoken insecurities in five seconds flat and then voicing them through a microphone whose sound flooded the large room for all to hear. I kid, she was actually very funny.

Among the many people, tray after tray of complimentary champagne, and even a little photo booth, there was a large spread of appetizers that hit the spot after a long day. Beyond the appetizers was a room where a silent auction was held, which had some amazing items.

And just when we thought the event couldn’t get any larger, a wide hallway lead us to a room where a feast was being created before our very eyes. Below is an array of mushrooms getting ready to complement servings of risotto- which was delicious.

We were also a little starstruck by the company of Billy Costa, who was auctioneering the event. Mayor Menino also made an appearance.

After the reception, many were taken to Boston restaurants, all of which donated a multi-course meal with wines, highlighting the chef’s skills and creativity.

It was so nice to take the time to support such a great organization and it was amazing to see such generosity, especially in these difficult economic times. Overall, the night was a success. Today, we were notified by Community Servings director David Waters that the event raised $445,000!
