As part of my packing strategy for my trip to Guatemala and El Salvador, I went to BJ’s Wholesale Club and bought a giant pack of LUNA bars – you would have thought I was packing to go live there.

Fearing that I might adopt the comfort level that my friend Sue had achieved after having lived in El Salvador for three years, the doctor at the travel clinic reminded me to be careful about eating produce, that bananas and anything else with an outer shell are okay and finally, to and bring a lot of power bars.
I chose LUNA bars because they sold me on their healthiness, their pretty package and their environmental and social responsibility. For starters, they are an active partner of the Breast Cancer Fund, recently launching the Pure Prevention Campaign. They also have a national traveling festival of short films by, for and about women – LUNAFEST – each ticket sold raises money for the BFC and local nonprofit organizations. LUNA bars are also environmentally responsible and organic.
In addition, they are so filling – and when you need to hold back from piling on the veggies in a burrito in Central America because you’re not supposed to eat them unless they are boiled – you get an appetite. My LUNA bars were a lifesaver.
So, if we can glean anything from my new obsession, it is this little tip: when traveling, bring food that is easy to pack and small, but filling so you can get by on less food during the day and perhaps have enough money left in your budget to splurge a bit on a nice dinner – I believe it is important to explore the delicacies of your travel destination.
Last night I realized that I can also apply this tip to everyday life.
I find myself famished and eager to get straight home for dinner after work instead of going right to the gym. I get out after 6, get to the gym after 7 (on a good day) and then I get home well past 8. Last night, I didn’t eat dinner until 9. I went to Whole Foods last night to buy some more LUNA bars because when I almost passed out on the treadmill from hunger, it hit me that I needed more sustenance after work.
Of the ones I have tried, Nutz Over Chocolate is my favorite, what is yours?

My favorite has got to be the mint chocolate Pria bars. Problem being, they’re covered in chocolate so they do melt.

I like Luna bars, too. They’re tasty and seem like a pretty responsible company from what I’ve read.
I most often eat them at home in the morning before I go exercise. They provide just enough fuel to get me through a cardio session and sit well with me before hard exercise (some food doesn’t).
I just had a peanut butter cookie flavor Luna that was pretty good.
luna bars are an obsession of mine… but not new at all! i’ve been eating these forever. my favorite is chocolate raspberry, peanut butter, and chocolate pecan pie!
S’Mores are my absolute favorite.
I’ve also found that buying them in bulk is way cheaper!

Man, luna bars saved my life (and wallet mostly) plenty of times when we were in europe and I was too cheap to buy breakfast or snacks because the pound and the euro was killing the dollar.
