To me, travel equals the experience of something new and that is why I like it so much. I don’t think one necessarily needs to get on a plane to travel, though I may just be saying that because I don’t get the opportunity to do so as much as I’d like. Either way, I try to see travel, as I have defined it, in everything.
As we are in our last day of 2008, and in hopes that listing them out in a thoughtful way will force me to keep them, I thought I would post some of my New Year resolutions.
You will see that I have mapped out my year in such a way that will make me more open and more apt to come upon new experiences, whether they be new ways to become healthy, the chance to feel like a tourist in my own city or simply the time to stop and appreciate what is already there in front of me.
So here goes…
Short and long term
1. TAKE LUNCH BREAKS, and actually leave the office for them!
2. When leaving the office for lunch, find a new restaurant or cafe to which I have never been, bi-weekly
3. Make it to Yoga every Sunday
4. Explore Boston more often, walk it even, as if I were hosting guests from far away
5. Cook something I have never made before, once a week
6. Acquire a taste for tofu
7. If I don’t have time to respond to an email, don’t even open it because it will only get lost, just wait
8. When I do go to restaurants I’ve been to before, avoid a familiar dish
9. Actually use my wine journal
10. Take Free and Flawed’s advice and get into Guidespot
And here, my destination wish list for 2009
1. Go to a city of Mike’s choosing (sick of experiencing new things without him, and realizing that I can be a bit of a control freak, I thrown out the idea to Mike that we should plan a trip together in the near future, and it will be where he wants to go – location TBD)
2. Fulfill phase 4 of our girlfriend getaways and hit up Montréal
2. Go to New York City to visit my friend Caitlin
3. Go to DC to visit my friend Brianne
4. Make it to Philly more often – eat more cheese steaks while I am there and also go to NorthThird
5. Go to Chicago – and do my best to budget for BlogHer and the 20SB’s Ultimate Meetup

yay! i’m excited about #5 on the destination wish list! i’ll be in chicago by then, and am super excited about the 20SB’s Meetup!

Ooh, those are good ones! I think I might add “cook more” plus “TRY to make it to BlogHer” to mine, as well! Oh, and I need to get back to NYC at some point (it’s been nearly a year!) and finally go to Philly while I’m there, too!

I’m loving your list! They’re all good resolutions! I love the one about exploring Boston as if you had house guests. I want to do that in my little town, too.
And I love that you want to take a trip with Mike because you’re tired of experiencing new things without him. I’m hoping my boy and I will make our first ‘real’ trip this year together and experience some new things, too!

You are ambitious! I did “cook something I’ve never made before” once a MONTH two years ago, so once a WEEK is really impressive to me!
I think perhaps you should add Portsmouth, NH to number 6 on your destination list (that is, if you haven’t spent lots of time here before). There are so many hidden gems in this town (from what I’ve read and heard), and I’m anxious to explore once it gets warmer out!

DEFINITELY get into Guidespot!!!
Also, I need to take your #7 advice. Because honestly, answering email is my biggest New Year’s resolution. I SUCK at it. I have over 1,000 new e-mails in my folder bc I get them all on my phone and fail to ever reply. If I don’t have time for it, I shouldn’t look at it!!
