three thanksgivings

CC at Fork in the Road had a pre-Thanksgiving dinner with her friends in Dallas this weekend. Coincidentally, I was doing the exact same thing here in Boston. And, I will be doing the exact same with again in Philly next weekend. And then, it will actually be Thanksgiving.

What got me thinking was her very poignant point about the show Friends…

When I first watched the show back in high school, I always thought that was strange. Why didn’t they go home to their families? But now that I’m older and living on my own in the city far from my family I understand. When you’re far from home, you develop a sort of “second family”.

I thought the exact same thing a while back. And today, while I live close to my family, there is something about Thanksgiving that compels friends to go great lengths to make extra time for each other, in the name of the holiday, but even when it can’t happen on the actual day. I think that is why it is one of my favorite holidays.
