It was recommended to me by the travel clinic to not check a bag when I travel to Central America because it would probably be too hectic in the Guatemala Airport. It was also recommended that the liquid bug repellent is more convenient than the cream and therefore more effective, but if I were to get the liquid instead of the cream I would have to check a bag because airlines don’t let you carry liquid onto the plane.
Either way, I am going to try to pack light.
One packing tip I will never forget was when I did Project Appalachia in college in which the group was given a demonstration of the best way to fit as much as you can into a small bag – roll up each article of clothing very tightly and then place them on top of one another.
Traveling Chic has this chic packing organizer, which comes filled with 3 cinch bags (lingerie, shoes, laundry) that help you keep your suitcase organized. Each bag has a cute label embroidered on it. If you couldn’t tell from my new design, it is my favorite color scheme.
I am still undecided, but if I choose to not check a bag, this would be perfect!

So, we ended up using TWO whole bottles of 100 percent DEET in Guatemala/Honduras, and we STILL got eaten up. Not sure how El Salvador is, but I’d imagine it’s pretty comparable. That’s forever going to be my tip to Central American travelers: Don’t neglect the repellent; whatever you think you might need, double that, because you sure as hell won’t find any down there!

ohhh…Guatemala!! Sounds like fun! I’ve had pretty good luck not loosing a bag, but I ALWAYS put the majority of my clothes in my cary on and then just use my checked bag for stuff when I’m coming home. If you can get away with it I’d not check anything…
Good luck with the malaria pills…which I’m assuming you’ll have to take!
you can totally get all the liquids you need in a carry on, suse.
i always just checked, but with the extra cost now..i did the 3oz liquid thing and i could actually get everything i needed. and
since i could probably pack for you…i think you could too. just
need to figure out the bug spray. i have little airport bags and
containers…we can do a test run between now and then. i fit all
of MY aussie products.
Wow. I’m incredibly impressed that you would travel only with a carry-on.
It’s a great idea — I know I had major issues in Italy with one of my bags. I can imagine things would be just as crazy in Central America.
